Building a Granny Flat could be a perfect fit for you, and it’s never been easier or more affordable in NSW.
Also referred to as a ‘secondary dwelling’, a granny flat can be certified as a complying development without the need for a development application, thanks to the State Environmental Planning Policy (Affordable Rental Housing) passed in 2009. According to NSW Planning & Environment , a granny flat may be approved within an amazing 20 days if it meets the design provisions.
In NSW, site requirements include a lot size of at least 450 sq/m, within the maximum footprint of 60sq/m for the granny flat. Boundary setbacks, environment, heritage and strata restrictions still apply, so it’s a good idea to bring building design experts on board to make sure your certification goes through smoothly.
